Have the Dallas Cowboys found their Backup Quarterback?

Well it’s nice to have Dak Prescott back and playing 100% of the time, but you always want to have a good backup Quarterback on your roster just in case!

Who do the Cowboys Currently have as Backups on their Roster?

The two quarterbacks on their current roster behind Prescott are veterans Cooper Rush and Will Grier. Rush, who started against the Minnesota Vikings last year in week 8 on Sunday Night Football won his debut in front of a sold out stadium in Minneapolis that included his parents watching from the stands. Meanwhile, Grier served as the active backup for just that one game and was inactive for the rest of the season when acquired by Dallas in September 2021.

Cowboys’ Minicamp

Last weekend, the Cowboys rookie minicamp took place at the Star in Frisco. Every one of the team’s nine draft picks and 20 undrafted free agents showed up.

Because the NFL disallows any quarterback who has already played in a regular season game from trying out, Dallas brought in two raw passers in Nick Starkel and Terry Wilson, according to ESPN’S Todd Archer.

Wilson started for the Kentucky Wildcats from 2018 through 2020 and earned the right to the nickname, “Terry Touchdown”. He threw for over 3,400 passing yards and ran for more than 1,000 yards. Most recently, Wilson transferred to New Mexico for one year. He then returned to Lexington for Kentucky’s Pro Day in March and got some quality exposure there. He targeted most of his passes to highly-touted and scouted wideout Wan’Dale Robinson. Robinson was drafted in the second round by the New York Giants.

Meanwhile, Starkel started out his collegiate career with the Texas A&M Aggies in 2017 and 2018.  He lost the starting QB job to Kellen Mond. Starkel then decided to transfer to the SEC  Arkansas Razorbacks. There, he played in eight games before having a conflict with the coaching staff. Once again Starkel transferred, but this time to San Jose in the 2020 season. As a grad transfer, he passed for over 2,100 yards and 17 touchdowns. The Spartans capped off a great season by winning the Mountain West Championship.

Who Would You Keep?

Okay all you Cowboys fans out there, let me know what you think? Typically a team carries “3” Quarterbacks on their team.  Here are my 3 early predictions:

#1: Dak Prescott – Really? Do I have to comment, Why?

#2: Terry Wilson –  aka, “Terry Touchdown”, Look, it’s the name here people. “Terry Touchdown” is a novelty and the type of underdog quarterback that has earned this opportunity as the backup quarterback. Also, he has incredible collegiate numbers, like throwing for over 3,400 yards. He also has great mobility rushing for over 1,000 yards with the Kentucky Wildcats. He then capped off a stellar collegiate career by transferring to New Mexico State. “Go Terry Touchdown!”

#3: Cooper Rush –  Rush has been a savvy veteran with the Cowboys and already knows the Cowboys offense. Plus, he did amazing in that start against the  Minnesota Vikings last year on Sunday Night Football. He put up 325 yards passing against a Mike Zimmer coached defense. Plus, he won the game with his parents watching in the stands. That’s awesome. Go Cooper!

So, we will all have to wait and see what happens with the Quarterback situation in Texas. It looks as if we have a number of halfway decent QB’s in camp to evaluate.

Now, all we have left to worry about is our “one kicker in camp” situation, oh boy!

  1. I like you our analysis Jamie and the “well drafted” team rooster situational update. I must say it’l be difficult to argue your case. Only time will tell. Let’s all see how this unfolds. Yes snd kickers can be had, lots out there especially in desperate sports venues/leagues. The good ones can be cross trained rather quickly if needed. .

  2. I guess we will just have to wait and see if your predictions are right!! Go Bills!!

  3. If someone has a conflict with coaching staff they’re likely to be a bust, just sayin.

  4. Is it true that the Giants are trading Wan Dale to the Bills for Allen and 2 first round draft picks? With a name like that it seems plausible.
