Small Struggles in Debut; Brewers Hang on to Win 7-6 vs the Cubs

This was not the debut Ethan Small was expecting.

Small was pulled after 69 pitches and less than three innings pitched as the Brewers hung onto win 7-6 in Game 1 of a doubleheader in Chicago.

Trouble started to arise for Small in the 3rd inning, when he allowed a leadoff single to Rafael Ortega and a walk to Christopher Morel. Small was able to induce a double play to Wilson Contreras, but after allowing three walks and a hit, Small’s day was done. Not a great MLB debut, but this is a good learning experience for Small.

There were positives to glean from Small’s debut.

Small is not a hard thrower by any means, (around 90-92 MPH) on his fastball, but he incorporates a changeup that garnered some swings and misses, but I would like to see him mix a slider into his pitching repertoire. Small only threw one slider in his outing while opting to throw mostly fastballs and changeups. Small has a deceptive arm angle, so it will be tough for hitters to pick up what he’s throwing, especially if he decides to work up in the zone; as he did with that strikeout to Contreras as shown above.

I’m excited for the development of Ethan Small, he was a first round selection for the Brewers back in 2019, and has pitched well in the minor leagues. Small last season in 21 starts, had a 4-2 record with a 1.98 ERA and 92 strikeouts over 7713 innings.

Small was also apart of the MLB All-Star Futures Game last year (this event is held in conjunction with the MLB All-Star Game) to showcase each organization’s top prospects.
