Historical Records

Multiple records have been broken within the past couple of weeks and recently. The Los Angeles Sparks become the first team in Franchise history to hit the milestone of 500 team wins.

The Los Angeles Sparks beat the Dallas Wings 97-89. Their contributed success was the 21 points each from Nneka Ogwumike and Liz Cambage. With that win, the Sparks made history by becoming the first WNBA team to reach 500 wins. The Sparks were one of the league’s founding franchises back in 1997, along with the New York Liberty and Phoenix Mercury. They are also the last three teams to still exist. The Phoenix Mercury and Liberty are not far behind, but it takes a few seasons for any team to catch up.

Moving on towards more personal accolades,Sue Bird Holds the record for the most wins in WNBA history. Within the Seattle Storm game against the Las Vegas Aces 88-78, Bird achieved 324 wins. She passed Hall of Famer Lindsay Whalen, who spent 15 seasons in the WNBA. This is Sue Bird final season, she is leaving a mark, adding more to her resume.

New York Liberty sstar Sabrina Ionescu,  recently made two records in the same night. She holds the most points within a triple double with 31 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists, marking the third triple-double of her career. She also tied her with Chicago sky’s Candance Parker for the most in a WNBA career. 24-year-old is just in the third season of her career after going to the Liberty at no. 1 overall in 2020.Ionescu averages 13.9 points, 6.2 rebounds and 6.1 assists. All eyes are on her to potentially mark another triple double this season.

With one last Historical achievement, Candance Park  is the only player to have a stat of 6,000 pts, 3,000 rebounds, and 1,500 assist. Parker got that achievement during the Chicago sky’s win over the Connecticut sun. She put up 24 points, 11 rebounds, seven assists, and four blocks. The closer player to reach this state was Hall of Famer, Tamika Cacthing. She was only 12 assists away after playing 15 seasons with the Indiana Fever. Catching finisher her career with 7,380 points, 3,315 rebounds, and 1,488 assists.

Sklylar Diggans-Smith has been hot in and off the court with points, as well as her comment. She has achieved 4000 career points against their previous game with the Chicago sky a week ago. She gained more attention with a singular emoji used on TwitterDiggins-Smith seemingly believes her own coach, Vanessa Nygaard, slighted her in recent comments about the WNBA All-Star game.Vanessa Nygaard made the remarks on the day after the WNBA All-Star starters and reserves were announced  seemingly slamming the voters for not putting Diggs’ teammate,Diana Taurasi, on the list.

In the Interview, Nygaard stated,”

I reiterate that Diana Taurasi should be an All-Star.There will be a game in Chicago, but it will not be an All-Star game because Diana Taurasi’s not playing.”

Later on, Diggins-Smith retweeted the video with a clown emoji, which claims to be shade towards her coach. The tweet is now deleted, but it is still hovering around social media.

It has not been easy for them or Phoenix, Diggins-Smith and Taurasi have had last month, the two got into a heated exchange right on the bench and had to be separated by their teammates. Diggins-Smith currently is involved in plenty of trade offers, leaving everyone the question “where will she end up” ? It is still early to know where she will land, but fans have taken to social media to support the decision and also leave a singular emoji for her coach.

Finally, One of the biggest topics still going on in the WNBA is the detainment of Brittney Griner. Ongoing support and rallies have been held all over America and sporting events to show support for the  two-time Olympic gold medalist and WNBA star.

Brittney Griner has been in custody since February and is being held under drug charger, an offense that can carry a sentence of up to 10 years behind bars in Russia.Griner’s wife, Cherelle used her voice to assert her message. In Arizona a  crowd assembled inside the downtown Footprint Center for the “Bring BG Home Rally” Cherelle Griner took the podiums walked to the podium during the ‘Bring BG Home’ rally at the Footprint Center.

More than 2,000 attended the rally at Footprint Center to support Griner’s return to the U.S. With the upcoming events and speculations, there may be a plan for Brittney Grineer to come home sooner than possible. With the trial currently unraveling, time will only tell.
