Packers end five-game losing streak; beat Cowboys 31-28 in overtime

The two Aarons dominated this game.

Rodgers went 14/20 for 224 yards, three touchdowns, and zero interceptions. All three touchdowns were to rookie WR Christian Watson who had his own coming-out party after two early drops in the first quarter.

Green Bay established the run early and often on Sunday. Running back Aaron Jones had 24 carries for 138 yards and a touchdown. Dallas came into the game with the 24th-ranked rushing defense in the NFL and whether it was Jones or AJ Dillon who had 13 carries for 65 yards. Dallas had no answer for Green Bay’s run game.

The real star of the game was Christian Watson.

Watson has had an up-and-down start to his NFL career.

But his performance on Sunday showed why Green Bay drafted him in the second round.

Watson has game-changing speed and if he can cut down on the drops and figure out a way to improve his ball-tracking skills, he can be a great wide receiver in Green Bay for years to come.

Green Bay’s defense:

Green Bay’s defense all season has had good moments and bad moments.

Let’s start with the bad moments: Green Bay took a 14-7 lead after an interception by safety Rudy Ford (more on him later). On the ensuing drive, Green Bay played soft coverage throughout the drive allowing Dallas to pick up chunk plays and eventually scored on a five-yard touchdown from Dak Prescott to tight end Dalton Schultz.

These are the situations where I would like to see Green Bay play more aggressively. Green Bay has the corners to guard Dallas’ receivers man-to-man so why is Joe Barry employing a soft coverage where all it takes is one big play for the offense to get in position to score.

Now for the good moments.

Rudy Ford. Before Sunday’s game, I will venture to say that not many die-hard NFL fans knew who Rudy Ford was and after Sunday’s game, you’ll wonder why he didn’t get an opportunity sooner.

Ford started in place of Darnell Savage who Green Bay moved to nickel after Eric Stokes was lost for the season with a knee injury.

In overtime, Green Bay’s defense got on a crucial stop on 4th and 3. Preston Smith and Jarran Reed were able to get pressure on Prescott and force a high throw to Tony Pollard, giving Green Bay the ball at their own 35-yard line.

Green Bay’s special teams:

Amari Rodgers should not be returning punts anymore. Rodgers fumbled away a crucial possession after Green Bay’s defense had gotten a stop. Dallas scored on the ensuing drive to go up 21-14 and Rodgers was replaced by Keisean Nixon after his latest fumble. This is how bad Amari Rodgers has been for the Packers.

Green Bay hasn’t had a game-changing returner since Micah Hyde and based on recent results, it doesn’t look like Amari Rodgers will fill that void.
