The Green Bay Packers have decided to release veteran wide receiver Sammy Watkins ahead of Monday’s game against the Rams.
Watkins caught 13 passes for 206 yards and zero touchdowns.
Why make this move now?
With rookie wide receiver Romeo Doubs returning in the next couple of games, there was going to be a move made at receiver, and Watkins was going to be the likely candidate because his role in the offense had diminished.
Watkins never looked comfortable in the offense and admitted to The Athletic’ Kalyn Kahler that the little details Rodgers wants to be executed to perfection “whether it is angle, yardage, eye, head or tempo.” Watkins who signed with the Packers in April said he finds himself confused sometimes despite eight-plus years of NFL experience.
Watkins will clear waivers, and any team is available to sign him.
