Things get ‘heated’ in Iowa’s upset win over No. 15 Indiana

If you did not take the time to turn on your television to watch No. 15 Indiana battle Iowa on Thursday night, you missed another terrific edition to to this matchup.

Indiana (10-4, 1-2 Big Ten) needed to win this game. It really needed to win this game. Iowa (9-6, 1-3 Big Ten) is not off to the best of starts in the 2022-23 season. Before it defeated Indiana, 91-89, the Hawkeyes had yet to win a conference game.

I won’t go too in-depth in this game. You can search the highlights up on YouTube or you can read the box score. This was a matchup to watch.

However, despite another classic Big Ten game, there was a quick spat with a little over a minute to go in the game.

With the Hoosiers trailing by two, an assistant coach on the Indiana bench was discussing something with a referee. While he was trying to have a conversation, Iowa head coach Fran McCaffrey walked over.

The referee involved in the discussion quickly separated Fran McCaffrey from Indiana’s side of the court. While the referee was handling Fran McCaffrey, Connor McCaffrey — one of Fran McCaffrey’s sons — walked over and shared a few words with the Indiana coaches and players. This led to some finger pointing from the Indiana bench, but nothing further.

This definitely wasn’t a dustup like we saw in last year’s Michigan/Wisconsin game when coaches Juwan Howard and Greg Gard came nose-to-nose with each other, but it was another piece in a puzzle that has become the Indiana/Iowa matchup.

Oh by the way, Indiana led this game by as much as 21 in the first half. This was the third-largest comeback in school history for Iowa. Mark your calendars folks, Indiana hosts Iowa in a rematch on Feb. 28. One of the last games of the regular season.

Indiana will face Northwestern on Sunday while Iowa go on the road to play a surging Rutgers squad.
