Notre Dame defeats Georgia Tech 73-72 after forcing OT

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish men’s basketball team (8-8, 0-5 ACC), faced the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (8-7, 1-4 ACC) in a battle of lower tier ACC teams Tuesday night.

Senior Dane Goodwin collected 19 points and 12 rebounds, while Nate Laszewski hit two key free throws with 23 seconds left in overtime to help the Irish squeak it out 73-72 over the Yellow Jackets.

Kyle Sturdivant had five points in OT for the YellowJackets. He missed a key 3 pointer along with Javon Franklin’s missed jump shot with less than five seconds remaining.

Goodwin and Trey Wertz both made 3-pointers for Notre Dame in the extra quarter.

“We are never going to go down not fighting,” Goodwin said. “We haven’t started out how we wanted but we hope to pull out more wins.”

Goodwin made it his fourth career double-double and first of the year. He threw for 6 of 11 from the floor and scored 6 of 7 free throws. Meanwhile, freshman J.J. Starling tallied 16 points.

“We knew what we had to do,” Starling added. “Keeping our heads high and all we need was one. It showed in spurts tonight that we could do it as five.”

Head coach Mike Brey thinks Notre Dame should have to keep coming back from behind if they want to squeeze out some big conference wins down the stretch. His team is very talented and has a ton of 3 point shooting weapons on his squad.

“Maybe we play better when we are against the wall,” Brey said.

With the win, the Irish finally earned ACC win number one and Brey now has a simple plan to try to grab an upset win against the Syracuse Orange (11-6, 4-2 ACC) this coming Saturday.

“Let’s head to Syracuse and shoot it out of the zone,” Bray said with confidence.
